Lafcadio Hearn Correspondence

Abstract

Lafcadio Hearn was a writer during the closing decades of the nineteenth century and the opening years of the twentieth. His writings--fiction and nonfiction alike--typically drew on his firsthand observations of life in what were then considered exotic places: New Orleans, the West Indies, and Japan.

These papers, which were collected by Lillian N. Dayries, consist of material that relates to the history of the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus. They relate primarily to Fr. Sullivan, though there is also considerable material about Fr. Ruggeri and Loyola University. The material is dated roughly from 1900 to 1967, mainly from 1910 to 1954.

Abstract

Father Twomey's papers, especially the correspondence, document this Jesuit's active involvement in the social apostolate. Also, they provide documentation about the Catholic Church's stance towards various social issues and about the recent history of New Orleans and the United States. Of particular value is material from the 1950s and 1960s concerning civil rights, labor-management relations, and communism.
